Diabetes Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that interferes with your body’s ability to use glucose for energy. Glucose comes from the food you eat and is the preferred source of energy for all the cells in your body.

If you have diabetes, your blood glucose levels are too high. That occurs because of problems involving insulin, the hormone made in your pancreas that helps transport glucose from your blood into your cells.

When you have diabetes, you either don’t make any (or enough) insulin, or the insulin cannot do its job. Too much glucose in your blood damages the blood vessels and organs, leading to health complications like heart disease or neuropathy (damaged nerves).

What are the types of diabetes?

There are many types of diabetes. However, the most common types include:

Type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. People with this type of diabetes don’t make any insulin and must take insulin injections.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is more common than Type 1 diabetes. With this type, you make insulin, but it’s unable to get the glucose from the blood into the cells.

Prediabetes

Prediabetes isn’t a type of diabetes but a condition that puts you at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. If you have prediabetes, your blood glucose numbers are higher than normal but not high enough for diabetes.

Taking steps to improve your blood glucose can reverse prediabetes and reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
